What happens to node operation when a consensus client adds new flags for archive storage and shutdown behavior? Offchain Labs published Prysm v7.3.0 on Oct. 16, 2026, an Ethereum consensus client release that adds an archive node mode and duty-aware validator shutdown. NFA.
Release Overview
The release launched on GitHub with notes that advise mainnet beacon node updates. Operators can now choose to run an archive node or adjust how the validator client handles stop signals. The notes list several flag changes and deprecations that affect daily node management.
Archive Node Mode
An enable-archive flag turns the beacon node into an archive node. This setup backfills blocks to an origin state. Archive mode also regenerates every historical state into the state-diff tree. The enable-state-diff flag is no longer marked experimental, so operators can use it without the prior warning label.
Validator Shutdown Behavior
On a stop signal the validator client waits for the current slot's duties, such as attestations, to finish. A second interrupt stops the process at once. A separate flag allows operators to turn the wait feature off entirely if immediate shutdown is preferred.
Checkpoint Sync and Metrics
Checkpoint sync can now start from a checkpoint that is not yet final. Payload gas limit and gas used metrics are set directly from each received execution payload. The doppelganger startup check logs at info level and reports its duration.
Deprecated Flags
The dev flag and the terminal override flags are deprecated because the merge is complete. Both flags continue to function for anyone who still relies on them.
Practical Impact for Holders
A holder who runs a beacon node gains the option to maintain a full archive copy without switching clients. The shutdown change reduces the chance that a validator misses duties during a planned stop. These options sit in the release notes for anyone reviewing the GitHub tag.
The same notes cover the checkpoint sync adjustment and the updated metrics collection. Operators can test the new flags on a non-production setup before applying them to mainnet nodes.
